Description: We are offering an oil on canvas painting by Johann Georg Meyer von Bremen (German, 1813-1886). The title of this painting is Girl With Slate.The image depicts a young school girl, sitting, facing the viewer. The subject is portrayed with dark blond hair kept with a blue ribbon, wearing a blue bib, white under blouse, and a red skirt with cover apron. The quiet, somber little girl sits in the threshold of a kitchen holding a slate while a worn book sits beside her.  German, circa 1865. Note: We have another Meyer von Bremen painting listed on eBay. The two oil paintings were actually bought at auction as a pair, and the interested collector should look over the other painting as well. They both deserve a good home!The frame is a majestic cedar wood 8-inch wide Classic Gold Frame, which is modern and not from the era of the painting.Artist: Listed artist Johann Georg Meyer von Bremen (1813-1886)  was born in Bremen on October 28, 1813.Von Bremen was a Genre painter. He was a brilliant pupil of Düsseldorf Academy under Karl Ferdinand Sohn (1805-1867, Cologne) and Friedrich Wilheim Schadow (1789-1862, Düsseldorf); von Bremen started painting biblical subjects, then traveled in the Hessian, Bavarian, and Swiss mountain districts, studying the people for his genre scenes, which have since become worldly known.He repeatedly visited Belgium, and in 1852 moved to Berlin; where he became professor in 1863. He was a member of the Amsterdam Academy, Order of Leopold. He won the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition medal in 1876. His works are exhibited at such prestigious museums as, The National Gallery, Berlin;  the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC;  the Brooklyn Museum of Art,  and the Cincinnati Museum, among others. Benezit, v. 9, page 562-63, and the Cyclopedia of Painters and Paintings, v.3, page 254-55, etc.The painting depicted here is a museum quality oil on canvas, typical of the work of the artist, i.e., young girls usually performing domestic chores, posing or simply being adored by their families, particular their mothers, parents and siblings.Marks: It is signed in the lower left corner, Meyer von Bremen (see photo).Size: 23 inches high by 17 3/4 inches wide (stretcher size).         38 1/2 inches high by 33 1/2 inches wide (frame size). The size of this majestic frame is nearly 8 inches on all sides.Condition: Overall the condition is very good with very fine craquelure consistent with age. There is a history of a previous restoration, but this is unnoticeable to us today. The painting as seen in one of the photos is framed and ready to be hung.Provenance: The work was acquired at auction and it is signed by the artist. It was appraised in 2002 by an accredited ISA appraiser for $25,000.  The painting is now hanging in our private, non-smoking residence.
