Description
Description: We are offering an oil on canvas painting by Johann Georg Meyer von Bremen (German, 1813-1886). The title of this painting is unknown, but we have chosen to call it Girl Fetching Water. The scene depicted is that of a young school girl fetching water, 3/4 view, gazing toward her right (i.e., viewer's left). The subject is portrayed with dark blond hair kept with a scarf, wearing a blue bib, white under blouse, and a red skirt with cover apron. The young girl gathers water from a trickle of waterfall with a clay pitcher. In the background, tree branches appear against a pale sky. German, circa 1860. The frame is a majestic cedar wood 8-inch wide Classic Gold Frame, which is modern and not from the era of the painting.Artist: Listed artist Johann Georg Meyer von Bremen (1813-1886) was born in Bremen on October 28, 1813.Von Bremen was a Genre painter. He was a brilliant pupil of Düsseldorf Academy under Karl Ferdinand Sohn (1805-1867, Cologne) and Friedrich Wilheim Schadow (1789-1862, Düsseldorf); von Bremen started painting biblical subjects, then traveled in the Hessian, Bavarian, and Swiss mountain districts, studying the people for his genre scenes, which have since become worldly known. He repeatedly visited Belgium, and in 1852 moved to Berlin; where he became professor in 1863. For References see: E. Benezit, v. 9, page 562-63, and the Cyclopedia of Painters and Paintings, v.3, page 254-55, etc. The painting depicted here is a museum quality oil on canvas, typical of the work of the artist, i.e., young girls usually performing domestic chores or simply being adored by their families, particular their mothers, parents and siblings.Marks: It is signed in the lower left corner, Meyer von Bremen (see photo). Size: 23 inches high by 17 3/4 inches wide (stretcher size). 26 1/8 inches high by 21 inches wide (frame size). The size of this majestic frame is nearly 8 inches on all sides.Condition: Overall the condition is very good with very fine craquelure consistent with age. There is a history of a previous restoration, but this is unnoticeable to us today. The painting as seen in one of the photos is framed and ready to be hung. Provenance: The work was acquired at auction and it is signed by the artist. It was appraised in 2002 by an accredited ISA appraiser for $22,500.
