In a survey taken in 1925, Van Gogh, Cezanne, and Parrish were thought to be the three greatest artists of all time. His posters, calendars, magazine covers, and book illustrations made him a household name. Consequently, Maxfield Parrish was the most popular American artist of the early decades of the twentieth century. A prolific and unique talent, Maxfield Parrish was born in 1870 and lived and worked throughout his career in the Cornish hills of New Hampshire. He passed away at the age of 95 in 1966, having lived to see his works continually revered by successive generations and recognized throughout the world. His use of color was pure and straight from his tubes of paint. The colors were so bold that even today Cobalt blue is referred to as “Maxfield Parrish Blue”. He laid out his paintings according to the lines of “Dynamic Symmetry”. It became a system for him- final execution was almost etching- like, precisely articulated with romantic images emanating from his incredibly fertile imagination. These images will stand forever, unique and strong, blending into a fantasy world never witnessed before or since.
