Passionate, significant and vivid, Blake's works are borne from a lifetime of ardent enthusiasm and respect for the sea. Since childhood, Tony, has developed a profound affinity for the men and the vessels that command the sea. Sailing extensively off the coast of New Zealand since he was six years old, designing his own eighteen foot catamaran, and placing second in a National Championship Race has developed a powerful devotion and an innate understanding of his work, which allows Blake's representations to come to life on the canvas. Using his personal resources, as well as outside research, Blake composes his oil paintings allowing the appreciative observer to experience the scene through emotions and action. Varying from historic portrayals of Great Clippers to modern day Maxi Ocean Racers to classic seascapes, Blake incorporates his extensive knowledge and love of his work into his paintings, giving them a sense of timelessness for generations to come. Born in 1951 in Auckland, New Zealand, Blake is part of a family devoted to the sea, as well as art. Both parents exhibit their work regularly throughout Northern New Zealand and Blake's brother, Peter, accomplished the amazing feat of commanding the winning yacht in the Whitbread Around the World Ocean Race. Having graduated from Aucklan University Engineering School with the Fould Memorial Prize for best Master's Degree, Blake has since left his career as a Civil Engineer and has delved into his second love - painting, his first love - the sea.
