Born and formally trained in Germany, Carl Rungius became one of the most noted painters of wildlife scenes in America. He often painted in plein air and his experience as a big game hunter augmented his understanding of wildlife subject matter. Influenced by the styles of German Romanticism and Realism as a student, Rungius arrived in New York in 1894 and made his first trip West in the following year. He was a member of the National Academy of Design in New York, but spent most of his career traveling throughout the West and Northwest, ultimately settling in Banff, Alberta. This painting, whic h is in excellent original condition, is characteristic of Rungius's depictions of big-game animals in impressive landscape settings.
