For information about Don Bachardy and Christopher Isherwood, don't miss the new and highly-praised (raves in The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times) documentary film CHRIS AND DON: A LOVE STORY now in nationwide theatrical release.  (For cities and schedules, consult http://www.zeitgeistfilms.com.)  The film documentary has renewed public interest in the 33 year committed relationship between Don Bachardy, the portrait artist, and Christopher Isherwood, the British-born novelist whose "The Berlin Stories" became the stage/film play I AM A CAMERA and later the stage/film musical CABARET.  Their love affair began in 1953 when Chris was 48 and Don was 18, and continued until Chris died in 1986. Don painted more than 1000 portraits of Chris.  (Separately, here on eBay, I am listing a beautiful catalog from the only exhibition thus far showing samples of these amazing paintings, including the cadaver paintings by Don after the death of Chris.  Take a look at that listing for additional information about the Bachardy/Isherwood partnership.) Don decided a few years ago to withhold from sale all of his portraits of Isherwood.  These important paintings ultimately will reside in one or more institutional collections (museums, etc.).  Don decided to permit three (3) exemplary paintings of Chris to be editioned using the giclee process so that the public would be able to own and enjoy these three paintings. Of the over-1000 portraits of Chris, Don's selection of only these three for editioning deserves attention, because they show Chris in his declining years.  Those familiar with Don's portraits understand that Don tells the "unvarnished truth" about his sitters.  He doesn't idealize, he records.  To adapt the well-used quotation from Chris, Don "is a camera." Offered here are the publisher's proofs of the three paintings of Chris that Don personally selected for editioning. The successful bidder in this listing will receive his or her selection of one (only one!) of these three giclee prints. The giclee process is a technological match-made-in-heaven for Don's paintings.  The paintings are scanned on a large industrial scale flatbed scanner.  The resulting computer scan file is transferred to the giclee printing machine which sprays through inkjets the three primary colors and the color black onto acid-free artist's paper (similar to the paper used by Don for the original paintings) to produce reduced-size versions as publisher's proofs.  These reduced-size versions are reviewed by Don and adjustments (color, saturation, etc.) are made until a final publisher's proof is approved by Don.  After the adjustments, a full to-scale artist's print is created, and then the edition is "run".  The final result - prints (inkjet on paper) that are practically indistinguisable from the original paintings!  Truly astonishing! For all three of these images, the size of the numbered (full to-scale and signed) edition is 100.  (The Huntington Library, which holds the Isherwood archives, owns the first of each of the full to-scale and signed editions.) Outside of the numbered portions of the editions are these reduced-scale and signed publisher's proofs, along with the artist's proof(s) and some h.o.c. (hors de commerce, or outside of commerce) prints. Please email me through the eBay system and include your direct email address if you would like to inspect the Certificate of Authenticity for any or all of these prints prior to your making your bid - the Certificate contains complete editioning information, including the size of the numbered and signed to-scale prints and the other prints, most of them reduced-size, outside of the numbered portion of the edition. The Certificate of Authenticity (which the successful bidder will receive with the print) contains the exact dimensions of the reduced-size prints offered in this listing, which vary from image to image, but which are, in general, approximately 9" wide by 14" high (image size) and 11" wide X 16" high (paper size).  If you need to know the exact image and paper sizes for each print, please send me an email through the eBay email system and I will add my reply to your email to this listing! Please note:  on these publisher's proofs, occasionally there are markings in pencil or in other media by the publisher and there are occasionally printed computer file directory information;  but these extraneous markings are outside of the image and will be easily hidden in the framing process by the use of a matte. Don has signed these publisher's proofs to indicate his satisfaction with them as works of art for sale to the public.  They really are beautiful.
