Greene, circa 1970, is entitled "Sophia". This pastel painting resides under glass in its original frame which measures 47.5" by 39.5" by 1.75 and weighs an estimated 30 lbs. Portion of the work that is visible within the frame measures 39.5" by 31.5". This work resides on a sheet measuring 41" by 32" made by Canson & Montgolfier of Vidalon France. This work was featured on pages 120-121 in Greene's landmark book, PASTEL...A Comprehensive Guide to Pastel Painting, edited by Joe Singer and published in 1974 by Watson-Guptill Publications. (This book remained in print for twenty-five years and was published in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Chinese). Signed by the artist in the lower right corner. (Additional images gladly forwarded upon request.)plohnc This haunting and lovely work depicts a topless female standing in front of a wall which features carved and reticulated gothic designs and coats of arms. On page 120 of his book Greene describes his approach to painting this lovely three-quarter length portrait: "I painted this figure in a distinctive side lighting arrangement that produced an interesting illumination of the right cheek, defining the planes of the cheek and nose. The effect of light falling on the subject in front of a dark background was a strong consideration in setting up the pose. Sufficient background elements were introduced to permint me to stress those I considered most intersting and to minimize those I wanted kept down." Condition is excellent. There is a thin line (roughly 1/16" wide) running horizontally across the upper area of the subject's breasts, and a barely noticeable short line running parallel roughly two inches below. These lines appear slightly raised. These are either flaws in the paper or possibly an object (such the rear of a painting stretcher) placed underneath the paper put enough pressure on the front surface to create the lines. The paint both on and near the lines is undisturbed and they were certainly not created by mold, water or moisture. There are no other visible blemishes.
