Nichols 1904-95 Metagraph UNTITLEDGuatamala Rubbing Signed and Dated   Dale Nichols was a native of David City, Nebraska. Born to Dale & Edithe Nichols, he grew up on a farm.   He is most well-known for his farm scene oil paintings.  In the 60's he visited & settled in Antiqua, Guatamala to explore the Mayan civilization.  He wrote 3 pamphlets on the subject, and published a book entitled "The Mayan Mystery".   Nichols lived in Guatamala for 2 Decades.  Through his attempts to recover the glory of the Maya Civilization, he became intrigued with creating METAGRAPHS.  Some of which are displayed in various private homes & collections, as well as museums around the country.   This Metagraph is Untitled   It measures: 39 1/4" Tall x 15 1/2" Wide   It is signed...Dale Nichols and dated....1989 It is one of the last Metagraphs he created.   His work is displayed in over 40 U.S. Art Museums and was displayed in 5 Worlds Fairs.   What is a Metagraph: Metagraphs differ from the usual familiar type of rubbing that you would see on rice paper.  A Metagraph makes it possible to indicate facial construction, intricate feather & Jewelry detail.  It's more like stamping rather than rubbing. They are done on Cloth which has been placed over a sculpture, & rubbed with a piece of the same material, saturated with Oil Paint.  Nichols called them Metagraphs, because like Metamorphosis (a caterpillar changes into a butterfly).   A piece of sculpture changes into a Graphic Work of Art.   ***This piece if from my own personal collection. I purchased   the piece privately in Feb. 1995 from a Nichols family member.  I purchased this one and 1 other that truly compliments this one. ***The other one is also listed, See My Other Auctions!       This lovely rare and collectible work of Dale Nichols has been framed professionally to protect the Metagraph. I personally had it framed so that the glass does not touch the surface of the oil paint artwork/cloth. On the back, you can see it was framed at Linda's Frame Shop & Gallery, Schuyler, NE    CONDITION: EXCELLENT This piece has been in my home for the past 13 years.  Protected from elements, and in a smoke-free environment.  Mentionable: My camera did not pick up the date very well in the pictures...Bid with Confidence it is 1989.....Keep in mind these pics were taken through glass, so if you see unusual glare, it's just from the camera...   The back has a copy of the David City, NE Newspaper article announcing the death of Nichols in 1995, just months after my purchase.
