Quilt measures 40" wide by 40" long. It is machine made and machine quilted, and includes a sleeve on the back for hanging. Created in January 2002. "Boy's Day" is one of the quilts made for my 'diagonals' series. This design was to become one of my best selling quilt patterns, Dancing Diagonals. "Boy's Day" and Girl's Day, were designed simultaneously - each starting with specialty Japanese fabrics printed to represent the celebrations of Girls' Day and Boy's Day, both very special days in the lives of Japanese children. The colors in each piece were chosen from the main colors in this special fabric. The boy's day print includes primarily red, yellow, and blue, making this a perfect example of a triadic color scheme. The use of tints (lightened primary colors) in the diagonal cause this to be the focus area.   The quilting is done in repeating circles, echoing the shapes of the balls in the print. The wonderful happy frog print, purchased in Hawaii, repeats the same red, yellow and violet colors, and introduces a spark of turquoise. With the exception of this border print and the solids, the fabrics used in Boy's Day are Japanese fabrics. Note how much more intense the colors. Their position on opposite sides of the diagonal make for perfect symmetry and balance. Free-motion quilted in a fun loop pattern to reflect the playfulness and roundness of the balls in the main fabric. A variety of rayon threads, mostly matching the colors in the quilt, used for quilting, providing a subtle detail seen mostly close up. Label is machine embroidered. This quilt is stunning, and would be a perfect gift for a little boy celebrating a 'coming of age' with a newly decorated room, or as a focal piece in a living room as simulated below.
