"It's all done," he said with a smile. "I just need to go in and do some final lining." Students designed the 40-foot-by-7.5-foot mural with the help of McMahon, who also has worked with students on a Lake Forest High School cafeteria mural and another at the McDonald's on Waukegan Road. The mural depicts dozens of students in various activities available at CROYA from playing Guitar Hero to shooting pool. Large blocks of color representing the different schools which the teens attend underlies the black-and-white montage of social interaction. "It's all the activities of the kids when they come here -- what's going on throughout the place," McMahon said earlier in the week. "My drawings are intermingled with their drawings," he said, pointing out some personalization by the students, including a Scout shirt, the Cubs and favorite colleges. The painting below the second floor mezzanine in the central gathering area of the Student Union. It's size and scope dominate the two-story space. "It's really cool," said Peyton Moore, 13, a 7th grader at Deer Path Middle School. Moore helped work on the original sketches and even completed one face herself on the final painting. 'Really pops out' When she walked into CROYA on Friday and she saw the finished product, Moore's first thought was: "Whoa! It's done," she said. "It's cool to see all the faces. It really pops out." Moore admits she was a little scared to climb up and down the scaffolding required to complete the project. Overcoming that initial anxiety has allowed her to help out with what she feels is an important part of CROYA. The mural, she said, "shows what people really do there. You can't be sad when you're there. It's impossible. There's so much fun going on and there's always someone you can hang out with." Twins John and Michael McMenamin of Lake Forest, sophomores at Lake Forest High School, helped with the planning sketches and the final transferring onto the mural space. Both are considering studying graphic design and appreciated the opportunity to work with McMahon. And climbing the scaffolding was fun. "At first, it was like, 'Whoa.' But then you got used to it. It put you right in the art," said Michael McMenamin. Both are pleased with the final product. "It shows what a fun place CROYA can be," said John McMenamin of the painting. "You can feel free to really express yourself here." "You feel welcome whenever you walk in here," Michael added. A time-elapse film of the painting process will be available for viewing on the local cable channel. http://www.mcmahonartgallery.com/h/harticles/01.html http://www.mcmahonartgallery.com/h/harticles/22.html http://www.mcmahonartgallery.com/h/harticles/10.html http://www.mcmahonartgallery.com/h/harticles/14.html http://www.mcmahonartgallery.com/h/harticles/11.html http://www.mcmahonartgallery.com/h/harticles/02.html Check out my other auctions and $ave on $hipping!
